Training Is Easier Than You Think
Back to BlogBringing home a new puppy is a whirlwind of wagging tails, puppy breath, and... a few ruined rugs. While the task of "training" can feel overwhelming, it is actually much simpler than the thick manuals make it out to be.
1. The 5-Minute Rule
The biggest mistake new owners make is trying to train for an hour at a time. A puppy's attention span is roughly the length of a TikTok video.
Keep it short:
- Train for only 10 minutes at a time.
- Do this 3 to 5 times a day.
- Always end on a "win" (a command they know well).
2. Capturing vs. Coaxing
Most people try to force a dog into a sit. Instead, try capturing. Stand in front of your puppy with a treat. Eventually, they will get bored of jumping and sit down naturally. The moment their butt hits the floor, say "Yes!" and give the treat. You aren't forcing them; you're rewarding a choice they made.
3. Consistency is Your Superpower
Dogs don't speak English; they speak "patterns." If you let the puppy on the couch on Friday but yell at them for it on Saturday, they aren't being stubborn—they are just confused.
"Training isn't something you do to your dog; it's something you do with your dog to build a relationship."
Key Vocabulary for Beginners
| Command | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Marker Word | A word like "Yes!" or a clicker to mark the exact moment they did right. |
| Luring | Using a treat like a magnet to guide their nose. |
| Proofing | Practicing a command in a busy place (like a park) instead of just your kitchen. |
The Secret Ingredient: Patience
Your puppy is a literal infant of a different species. There will be accidents and chewed shoes. But if you keep your sessions short, fun, and consistent, you'll find that training isn't a chore—it’s the best way to bond with your new best friend.
